STRONGER THINGS – DEVELOPING A STRONG SPIRIT

Week #1 of our “Stronger Things” Series

DEVELOPING A STRONG SPIRIT

Ephesians 3:14-21 – 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

When we’re talking about a strong spirit, we’re talking about the Holy Spirit

An overview of The Holy Spirit / Spirituality today
a. A lot of bad/misinformation

We look to Scripture for our definitions of anything

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

TRINITY

  1. Three persons
  2. Word “Trinity” is not in Scripture, but the concept is all throughout Scripture
  3. Word “Trinity” first used by the early church father, Tertullian (AD 150-220)
  4. Does not mean:
    1. There are three Gods
    2. God chooses which one He wants to show up as on occasion
  5. Here is the definition we can derive from scriptural concepts:
  6. “The Trinity is one God who eternally exists as three distinct persons – God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit – who are each fully and equally God in eternal relation with each other.”
  7. To say they are all “persons” does not mean that the Father or the Spirit became human beings, but it does mean that each one thinks, acts, feels, speaks and relates because they are all personal, not impersonal forces.

AS GOD

  1. He is CREATOR
    1. Genesis 1:2 – The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
    2. Psalm 104:30 – When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.
  2. He is ETERNAL
    1. Hebrews 9:14 – how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
  3. He is OMNIPOTENT (All Powerful)
    1. Micah 3:8a – But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord
    2. Acts 1:8 (Jesus) – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
    3. Romans 15:13,19a – 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. 19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God…
  4. He is OMNISCIENT (All Knowing)
    1. You think Google is the best search engine? No way!
    2. Isaiah 40:13-14
    3. 1 Cor 2:10 – these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
  5. He is OMNIPRESENT (Everywhere at once)
    1. Psalm 139:7 – Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?
  6. He is declared God in the N.T.
    1. 2 Cor 3:17-18 –17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, Beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

WORKED IN AND THROUGH JESUS

  1. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit
    1. Luke 1:35-37 – And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”
  2. He was given the title “Christ”, which means “anointed by the Holy Spirit”
    1. John 1:41 – [Andrew] first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
  3. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus at His baptism
    1. Matthew 3:16 – And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
  4. Jesus was “full” of and “led by” the Holy Spirit
    1. Luke 4:1 – And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness
  5. Jesus came in the power of the Holy Spirit
    1. Luke 4:14 – And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.
  6. Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit
    1. Luke 10:21 – In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

PRACTICALLY – HOW DO I DEVELOP A STRONG SPIRIT?

1) EAT RIGHT & EXERCISE DAILY

One of the most important pieces of advice I can ever give you to go through life successfully is this: Read the Bible and do what it says

John 14:26 – But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

  1. When you want to get stronger mentally you learn from a teacher. When you want to get stronger physically, you learn from a trainer. When you want to get stronger spiritually, you learn from the Holy Spirit (teacher, trainer)
  2. The Holy Spirit is given to us as our Helper. Here’s what He does
    1. CONVICTION OF SIN, RIGHTEOUSNESS & JUDGEMENT
      1. John 16:8-11 – 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
    2. RESTRAINING EVIL
      1. 2 Thessalonians 2:7 – For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only [The Spirit] who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.

2) REMEMBER IT’S NOT ABOUT WHO YOU ARE, IT’S ABOUT WHOSE YOU ARE a. HOLY SPIRIT’S INTERACTIONS WHEN YOU BECOME A CHRIST FOLLOWER
  1. BAPTISM
    1. 1 Cor 12:13 – For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
  2. REGENERATION & RENEWAL
    1. Romans 8:14 – 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
      1. Titus 3:5 – [Jesus] saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
  3. INDWELLING (LIVES IN YOU)
    1. 1 Cor 6:19 – Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
  4. SEALED
    1. Like Andy’s toys in Toy Story
      1. Ephesians 1:13-14 – In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

3) FOCUS INWARD RATHER THAN OUTWARD

  1. BEING FILLED i. Ephesians 5:18b – … but be filled with the Spirit,
    1. HOW? Galatians 5:16-18, 25 – 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
      1. Confess Sins
        1. 1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
      2. Yield to Him
        1. Rom 6:13 (NIV) – Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.
  2. DEVELOPING FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
    1. Galatians 5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
  3. ILLUMINATION & UNDERSTANDING
    1. John 16:13 – “guide you in truth” – When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
    2. 1 Cor 2:12 – “understand the things…of God” – Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

Ultimately, it’s about the change that happens in your heart. Do you trust Jesus with all that He’s done for you, or do you want to keep living on your own power?

Here’s the lie. The lie is that we’re better off, we’re stronger on our own. We’re taught not to show weakness, to grit our teeth and bear it.

Here’s the truth though. You can’t do it on your own. God knew that. It’s why He sent His only Son, Jesus to die on a cross for our sins. To pay the price that we could never pay and to die the death we should have died.

Jesus knew we couldn’t do it on our own – that’s why He sent the Holy Spirit as our Helper, to make us stronger.

When we tap into His strength, we become Stronger.
